VLC graduate Kelly Richmond of New York
VLC: Where do you work as a medical transcriptionist and how long have you been there?
Kelly: I work from home in New York for a company out of Canada.
VLC: Do you work at home or in an office?
Kelly: At home in the evenings.
VLC: What did you do before becoming an MT?
Kelly: I also work in a hospital as a lab technologist.
VLC: Why did you decide to become an MT?
Kelly: For a future career that I can do from home.
VLC: How long did it take you to complete your course?
Kelly: I think about a year-and-a-half.
VLC: What did you enjoy most about the course?
Kelly: The practice transcription.
VLC: Do you find the practice dictation is helping you in a real-work situation?
Kelly: Yes, they were very helpful.
VLC: How did you go about applying for jobs?
Kelly: Just through the Internet. I sent my resume to lots of companies.
VLC: How long did it take you to find a job?
Kelly: About 2 months.
VLC: Are you paid by the line or by the hour?
Kelly: By the line.
VLC: Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of training to be an MT?
Kelly: Be prepared to learn a lot of terminology and drug names etc.
VLC: Do you have any advice on beneficial resources for new MTs?
Kelly: The Internet is great for researching. I invested in a couple of good books (dictionary, a drug book, AAMT BOS) and the rest I do on the Internet.
