The VLC talks with working grads
VLC graduate Connie Barbour of Georgia
VLC: Where do you work as a medical transcriptionist and how long have you been there?
Connie: I have been working for one month now with MediVoxx. I work from home (Georgia), and they are located in Louisville, Kentucky.
VLC: Do you work at home or in an office?
Connie: I work from home, 20 hours a week split into five 4-hour shifts during the week. I am still in the training phase with them so have been getting a variety of clients.
VLC: What did you do before becoming an MT?
Connie: Registered Nurse.
VLC: Why did you decide to become an MT?
Connie: To be able to work from home while raising my children.
VLC: Which of VLC medical transcription courses did you take?
Connie: The name changed several times but I believe the professional level.
VLC: How long did it take you to complete it?
Connie: Over 2 years due to having second child.
VLC: What did you enjoy most about the course?
Connie: The ability to do it from my home.
VLC: Do you find the practice tapes are helping you in a real-work situation?
Connie: Yes.
VLC: How did you go about applying for jobs?
Connie: I applied for one job prior to MediVoxx, which was a referral from a friend. I did not get that one. Then Beverly Henderson e-mailed me about MediVoxx looking for new graduates.
VLC: How long did it take you to find a job?
Connie: Less than a month.
VLC: Are you paid by the line or by the hour?
Connie: By the line.
VLC: Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of training to be an MT?
Connie: Doing an online course takes a tremendous amount of dedication and having some type of medical background would be very helpful when taking an online course because of the quantity of information you have to learn.
VLC: Do you have any advice on beneficial resources for new MTs?
Connie: Anything and everything can be found on the Internet now through Google. Therefore, being very proficient at doing searches on the Internet will get you all the resource information you need.
