The VLC talks with working grads
VLC graduate Bridget Scott of Minnesota
VLC: Where do you work as a medical transcriptionist and how long have you been there?
Bridget: I work for a company in Minnesota, from my home. I've been working for three weeks.
VLC: What did you do before becoming an MT?
Bridget: Laboratory Technologist supervisor at our local hospital for 15 years.
VLC: Why did you decide to become an MT?
Bridget: I wanted to earn extra money working from home and building on knowledge I already have.
VLC: Which of VLC medical transcription courses did you take?
Bridget: MT Intermediate.
VLC: How long did it take you to complete it?
Bridget: About five months.
VLC: Who were your instructors?
Bridget: Bev, Sheila and Susan.
VLC: What did you enjoy most about the course?
Bridget: Practice dictation/transcription and feedback from instructors.
VLC: Do you find the practice tapes are helping you in a real-work situation?
Bridget: They were invaluable.
VLC: How did you go about applying for jobs?
Bridget: I applied through the internet using the businesses posted on the VLC's website; however, my current position came as a result of a referral from one of my instructors. This is a good reason to keep the grades up.
VLC: How long did it take you to find a job?
Bridget: Two weeks
VLC: Are you paid by the line or by the hour?
Bridget: I am paid by the line.
VLC: Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of training to be an MT?
Bridget: Take your time with the course and do as many practice tapes as possible. Purchase reference material because you will most definitely use it.
