VLC graduate Debby Hamblin
VLC: Where do you work as a medical Transcriptionist and how long have you been there?
Debby: At home.
VLC: What did you do before becoming an MT?
Debby: I worked in a factory for 18 years.
VLC: Why did you decide to become an MT?
Debby: Due to closing down of our factories, my parents being elderly and needing more flexible time.
VLC: Which of the VLC medical transcription courses did you take?
Debby: Professional course [now Advanced].
VLC: How long did it take you to complete it?
Debby: About 22 months. I worked full time while I took the course.
VLC: Who was your instructor(s)?
Debby: Carol, Sheila, Bev, and Carole.
VLC: What did you enjoy most about the course?
Debby: All of it. I had a really enjoyable time studying all of it. I think mainly because it was at my own pace.
VLC: Do you find the practice tapes are helping you in a real-work situation?
Debby: Yes, most definitely.
VLC: How did you go about applying for jobs?
Debby: My first job I applied for was at our local hospital. After I got my experience in, then I applied online.
VLC: How long did it take you to find a job?
Debby: About 2 weeks.
VLC: Are you paid by the line or by the hour?
Debby: By the line.
VLC: Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of training to be an MT?
Debby: First, find a reputable course like the VLC, one that is detailed with a lot to it and make sure that you study everything and retain it as much as possible. It will come in handy in the real world of transcription.
